Nutrition Policy Dialogue 2020

As part of efforts to improve Nigeria’s nutrition statistics, a National Strategic Plan of Action for Nutrition (NSPAN) was devised for implementation between 2014 and 2019. It is a follow-on to other strategic documents including Vision 20:2020 and the National Strategic Health Development Plan for 2009 to 2015. The plan provides guidance and motivation to the different levels of government to develop more in-depth implementation plans for nutrition interventions in Nigeria.

In light of this, Nigeria Health Watch, in partnership with Alive and Thrive, conducted a comprehensive review of the implementation of the National Strategic Plan of Action for Nutrition (NSPAN) during a nutrition policy dialogue held on June 16, 2020. The event gathered key stakeholders to discuss crucial aspects, including the development and execution of the NSPAN, the roles of various stakeholders, and the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on nutrition efforts.

Implementation of guidelines for a minimum package of nutritious food groups for palliatives during crises, promoting the inclusion of animal source proteins, and distribution of nutritious food baskets to support vulnerable groups. Social media should be used to educate Nigerians about healthy eating and locally available nutritious foods. These efforts are essential to accelerate progress towards meeting global nutrition targets in Nigeria.
