New strategic framework and survey findings to guide evidence-based interventions and accelerate progress towards malaria elimination in Nigeria.

The National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare will today launch the 2026–2030 Nigeria Malaria Strategic Plan (NMSP) and the 2025 Nigeria Malaria Indicator Survey (NMIS) Report, two critical documents designed to strengthen Nigeria’s malaria response and accelerate progress towards elimination.

The launch, scheduled to take place at Barcelona Hotel, Abuja, will bring together key stakeholders to review evidence on the country’s malaria situation and advance a coordinated approach to reducing the burden of malaria across Nigeria.

The 2025 NMIS provides critical data to inform the design and implementation of targeted malaria interventions, offering an evidence base for understanding the country’s malaria burden and identifying priority areas for action. The findings are expected to support decision-making by policymakers, health practitioners, development partners and other stakeholders working to improve malaria prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Complementing the survey, the 2026–2030 NMSP establishes the strategic direction for Nigeria’s malaria response over the next five years. Developed by NMEP in collaboration with its partners, the plan draws on findings from the 2025 NMIS and other available evidence to guide interventions aimed at significantly reducing the malaria burden through innovative approaches and coordinated efforts across all levels of government and the health system.

The launch comes as Nigeria continues to prioritise malaria elimination through strengthened health systems, evidence-informed policies and collective action among government institutions, development partners, civil society organisations, the private sector and communities.

Successful implementation of the strategic plan will require sustained political commitment, adequate financing, effective coordination and accountability for results. It will also depend on ensuring that the evidence generated through the NMIS translates into practical interventions that reach populations most affected by malaria.

The two documents are expected to serve as important resources for aligning stakeholder efforts, strengthening programme implementation and tracking progress towards national malaria targets through 2030.
