Special Announcement: Introducing the “Health Leadership Academy”

2 Mins read

The Health Leadership Academy has a bold vision to transform healthcare in Africa by developing a generation of healthcare leaders who will excel in governance and provision of quality services. Its programmes will enable healthcare leaders and policymakers to expand into their roles, transform organisational cultures and create an enduring impact on health sector strengthening. It will develop the leaders that will bring the change that we seek to the Nigerian health sector.

With Nigerian health professionals excelling all over the world, it has become clear that the challenges of the health sector do not lie in capacity for clinical expertise. In the past ten years, there have been massive investments by both the public and private sectors in developing healthcare infrastructure, with many so called “world-class” hospitals springing up. Yet the sector has remained broadly where it has always been. To build the health sector of our dreams, we need not only skilled healthcare workers but also motivated ones, and leaders with the capability to manage large complex institutions. We need leaders – in the true meaning of the word.

In a recent survey, leaders of health organisations said the following;

“Though I handle the financial records of my organisation, you can tell from the quality of my reports that I am not an accountant.”

“I really wish I could groom a good number of staff that understand and can run with my vision.”

“As a leader, my main challenge has been how to ensure that my unit members follow instructions and do not cut corners.”

The Health Leadership Academy (HLA) seeks to change this. It is a joint initiative of the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria, the Health Strategy and Delivery Foundation and EpiAfric.

The partnership has recently called for applications for its inaugural flagship programme, the Healthcare Executives Leadership Programme (HELP)

Healthcare Executives Leadership Programme (HELP)

This programme targets leaders of healthcare institutions that seek to develop their capacity to drive change and grow their organisations. It will bring together an incredible faculty of thought-leaders from the renowned Cambridge University’s Judge Business School, Lagos Business School, Duke University, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, and EpiAfric.  This unique mix of world class international and local institutions will deliver content that has specifically been designed and developed for the Nigerian context, and will cover:

  • Financial Management
  • Leadership and Organisational Development
  • Quality Improvement, and
  • Population Health and Health Systems

This flagship programme of the HLA will use a “field and forum” approach, that combines in-class didactic curricular with real-life, hands-on work, which will be delivered over 10 weekends, followed by a 9-month fellowship. This will ensure that the capabilities built are directly applied by participants to their organisations to improve performance and health outcomes.

Could this be for you?

Are you already a committed and enthusiastic healthcare executive, looking to broaden your healthcare leadership skills? Are you already part of the management of healthcare provider groups such as clinics, hospitals, or health systems? Do you have a genuine desire to transform your organisation? Do you have an existing management structure in your organisation? If the answer to all or the questions above are yes, then team up with one other member of your management structure to whom this also applies (e.g. Chief Medical Director and Head of Administration, or Head of Finance, or Head of Human Resources, or Head of Nursing Services) and apply.

For more information on the programme and to find out how to apply, visit www.hlaafrica.org or contact HLA by emailing letter of interest and CVs to info@hlaafrica.org

Closing date and time: 5pm September 25, 2015
