Health Watch Forum 2018: The Elephant in the Room – Men as Change Agents in Family Planning Discourse
April 18, 2018 @ 8:00 am - 12:00 pm WAT
Nigeria is facing a population explosion, which if not meaningfully tackled, will affect our ability as a country to meet the needs of every Nigerian. In no sector is this more obvious than in the health sector. Family planning is one of the leading strategies to improve family life and welfare, control unwanted population growth, and aid the development of the nation. Though traditional family planning programs focus primarily on women, men are often the primary decision makers about family size, health services, and family planning methods.
In light of this, Nigeria Health Watch will hold its first Health Watch Forum of the year, themed “The Elephant in the Room – Men as Change Agents in Family Planning Discourse.” We hope that the Forum will give an opportunity to enlighten the Nigerian health sector, help create a greater sense of urgency to address the low Contraceptive Prevalence Rate and increase uptake of Family Planning commodities.
The forum will address some of these issues:
1. How would Nigeria meet its FP2020 commitments;
2. Child spacing as a resource planning tool; and
3. #NaijaMen4FP: Calling attention to the role of men in family planning
