Can a “Business” approach help save Nigeria’s health sector?

2 Mins read

What do “healthcare” and “business” have in common? Can the principles that drive successful businesses be applied to revitalising our healthcare industry? Will healthcare delivery in Nigeria be more effective if approached with business models rather than social welfare models? What makes healthcare such a hard nut to crack from a business perspective?

At its third annual Future of Health Conference, themed “The Business of Health,” Nigeria Health Watch has brought together an exciting line-up of speakers to provide various perspectives on how business models, using the term “business” in the broadest sense, can help bridge the gap in healthcare in Nigeria’s health sector, with the ultimate goal being Universal Health. You do not want to miss this one!

The Future of Health conference series has become the premier forum where the hopes and aspirations of Nigerians for their health sector are articulated. Annually, the conference brings together inspiring speakers responding to some of the toughest challenges facing the Nigerian health sector.

Our speakers this year are some of healthcare’s most prominent business minds. The first session of the conference, tagged, “Breaking down the barriers; Delivering quality and improving access to healthcare”, includes an impressive panel of innovators – Dr Nthabiseng Legoete, founder, Quali Health an innovative private sector healthcare provider in South Africa, Michelle Akande responsible for Janssen’s Oncology portfolio in Africa; Harriet Blest, Country Manager for Human Network International, Peter Bamkole, Director, Enterprise Development Centre (EDC) of the Pan-Atlantic University; Ezinne Anyanwu, Managing Director of the health-tech startup Efferent Services Limited, Dr Olaokun Soyinka, Project Director of the Independent Verification Agent for the Saving One Million Lives Programme. They will highlight from their own experiences, how employing diverse business principles can deliver quality and improve access to healthcare in Nigeria in both the public and private sector.

The second session will focus on “People-centred care; the heart of every successful enterprise”, and features a unique panel of speakers who will illustrate how and why focusing on the “end-user” in healthcare can shape the Nigerian health sector, whether private or public.  Our eclectic mix of speakers who will provide unique insights include – Dr Cheluchi Onyemelukwe, a leading health sector lawyer in Nigeria; Bond Emeruwa, a veteran of Nollywood and who has been doing more on health than you may know; Dr Omokhudu Idogho, Deputy Managing Director, Society for Family Health who has interesting ideas about social business enterprise; Dr Farouk Jega, Country Representative at Pathfinder International; Dr Ike Nwachukwu, founder and cofounder of three companies involved in Nigerian healthcare, including Nikea Specialist Hospital and Obinnia Abajue, CEO Hygeia HMO who has more than 20 years of experience in Banking and Financial services primarily in Nigeria.

The “Business of Health” will be co-moderated by Dr Ike Anya, Public Health Physician and Curator, Nigeria Health Watch, and Ekaette Umoh, MD/CEO of Business Support Microfinance Bank Ltd.
